nasopnaryngeal carcinoma radiotherapy dose

Date and Time

August 30th 2024 8 am SGT, 7 am Jakarta/Hanoi/Bangkok, 10 am Brisbane/Sydney

Introduction

Advances in head and neck oncology have significantly improved the prognosis and quality of life for patients, offering more effective and less invasive treatment options, better management of side effects, and a more personalized approach to cancer care.

Learning Objectives

Advances in Diagnostics:

Genomic Profiling: Enables the identification of specific genetic mutations and alterations, guiding targeted therapies.

Liquid Biopsies: Non-invasive tests that detect circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) for monitoring disease progression and response to treatment.

Advanced Imaging Techniques: Improved imaging modalities such as PET/CT and MRI provide better tumor visualization and treatment planning.

Surgical Techniques:

Minimally Invasive Surgery: Techniques such as transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and endoscopic approaches reduce morbidity and improve recovery times.

Proton Beam Therapy: Offers precise dose delivery with minimal exit dose, potentially reducing long-term side effects.

Adaptive Radiotherapy: Utilizes advanced imaging to adapt the treatment plan based on changes in tumor size and patient anatomy during the treatment course.

Molecular Targeted Therapies:

  • EGFR Inhibitors: Drugs like cetuximab target the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which is often over-expressed in head and neck cancers, improving outcomes in certain patients.
  • Checkpoint Inhibitors: Immunotherapies that block PD-1/PD-L1 and CTLA-4 pathways have led to durable responses and improved survival in patients with advanced disease.

Dr Adam Holtzman speaking in Proton Therapy SG webinar

Dr. Adam Holtzman is a board-certified radiation oncologist with expertise in head and neck and skull-base tumors. Dr. Holtzman received his BS and MD at the University of Florida (UF), where he completed the accelerated combined undergraduate and medical school honors program. He continued his post-graduate residency at UF and then as faculty at the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute before joining Mayo Clinic Florida. His primary research interest is in clinical trials and advanced radiotherapy techniques, including particle therapy. He has led several studies investigating and establishing the efficacy and safety for high-dose conformal particle therapy.
